BY AN INSPIRATION.
The great hall was crowded with men and women and children, assembled there to hear the story of a returned gold miuer. The lecturer had interested them throughout tho tale, and was about to conclude, when a man rushed into the hall. His features were ghastly pale, and his eyes plainly showed that teiror filled his heart. He approached the lecturer, and in a terrified whisper snid : " Tbe house is on fire. The people will soon know—the panic will come and the results will be horrible." For a moment tho lecturer was appalled as he thought of the swift change which was soon to ccme over that pr?at crowd of humanity, and bis heart throbbed with pain as he thought of tbe manly formp, the beautiful women, and the little children who would soon lie beneath the trampling feet of the strong, to bo crushed into lifeless lumps of clay. Then came an inspiration. Stepping to the pfiitforrn, he i»poko : " Ladies and gentlemeD," said he, " my lecture will conclude in five minutes, and a collection will be made for the poor heathen in Alaska." He resumed his story of " How I Found Gold on the Yukon," but did not proceed far. In three minutes tho ball was quite dostrted.
