SIIE ND Y CAPTURED. ENEMY'S POSITION DESPERATE London, March 110. The British gunboats have captured Shendy, tho Dervish stronghold on the Nile, opposite Metammeh. The Dervishes to the number of 700 assembled in front of Shendy. Three British gunboats shelled them while the Egyptian forces outflanked the enemy, who fled. They were pursued for 20 miles, and IGO were killed. The forts were destroyed, and large quantities of grain, stores, and ammunition were captured. Six hundred slaves were also liberated. Mahmud, the Dervish leader, has asked the Khalifa to give hiin fiesh instructions prior to taking actiun against the British army. He points out that the concentration of the British forces prevents any attack upon Berber by the Dervishes. A Reuter's messago says that Mahmud is practically besieged, and his forces are in a state of starvation.
