THE PREMIER.
(IJY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Gisborne, Last ISlight. The Hinemoa, with the Premier on board, arrived early this morning. The Premier was deputationised in respect of light railway aod various local wants. He said be had to be careful not to involve the Government in large expenditure, as it was not the intmtion to borrow for public works, at least not on a large scale, though the Government desire to promote settlement with the funds at their disposal. He considered that the £60,000, the unexpended balance of the Gisborne harbour loan, now in the hands of the Public Trustee might advantageously be expended in railway construction, and he was willing to do what he could to get the legislature to sanction thedhersion of the money to that purpose and possibly a Government subsidy could be obtained for it. Under the present circumstances it would be many years before the Government could see their way to construct the proposed line.
