RIOTS AT KALGOORLIE.
On Friday the Premier of Western Australia, Sir J. Forrest, visited Kalgnorlie. When he arrived there there were about 10 v OOO diggers assembled at the station, with flags and banners flying. The diggers hooted him all the way to the hotel, which they endeavoured to take possession of, but were frustrated by the police. An appeal was made to him to repeal the 10 feet regulation, and release the imprisoned men at once. Sir John, after listening to statements laid before him, said the men had made out a better case than he thought they had. The men who were imprisoned had defied the law and must purge their contempt and apologise. He would not be hustled into any action, he must have the law obeyed. As to amendments in the law, he would consider them in Cabinet and give an answer in a week. The crowd outside by this time had become turbulent, and several of the deputation went out and tried to pacify them. One of the Bulong residents said : •' Allow me to tell you t"ir John that your answer is most unsatisfactory. We want j our opinion on the 10 feet regulations ; also a definite answer to our appeal for the four men's release." The Premier grew angry and left the hotel ; when he s?ot outside he was rushed. Thousands pressed on him and he was struck in the face and bruised despite the efforts of the police. He reached the railway station at last, but the diggers were in possession. The Premier by this time was much knocked about. The Warder considering life in danger, lead the Riot Act, and mounted troopers rode the crowd down aud galloped away for rifles. By the time they returned the dcor of the station had been forced, and the Premier having got through the door,it was barricaded again. The Premier entered a carriage, and the train steamed slowly towards the Boulder, but hearing that the rails were torn up, returned to Kaleoorlip, thence to Perth. On reaching Perth, Sir John received a great ovation.
