The Waikato Argus GEORGE EDGECUMBE, Proprietor. SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 1898.
In another column we print a memorial which is in course of signature in the Raglan County in reference to the construction of a ne.v road. The memorialists have not in any way overstated their case. The read at present in use over the mountain was constructed during the war for the purpose of convening provisions to the troaps engaged, and since that time there has been little done in the way of improvement. The grade of this road is iu some places as great as one in five. The proposed line follows as nearly as possible the old Maori tracks, while throughout its length the gradients are not steeper than 1 in 20, and tho distance between Waitetuna and Whatawhata is shortened by about three miles, and the time occupied in travelling would be lessened by over an hour. When this road was previously proposed the great objection to it was that a costly bridge would be needed over the Waitetuna stieam, but this objection is now overcome, as a good bridge, which would be on this line, has lately been built by the Government to give Mr Daw access to his land. We trust that the settlers will be successful in their endeavours to have this road made, as it will open up a lot of good new country, and also make the sea coast available from Waikato at all times and give settlers an outlet for their stock and produce throughout the year.
