THE HARAPIPI MURDERER.
TO THE KDITOIt. Sir,—There appears to be a considerable amount of feeling over the verd : ct in tin Harapipi murder case. Be'ug present throughout tho hearing of the cise, it appeared to me that the Judge and jury did not like the respons b lity of tentencing so old a man to death, and avoided ic by dec'ariug him insane, a'i hough no evid nee whatever in proof of hs-iuity was given. Anyway, he u put eafely out of the road so far as we are concerned, and his pun : shmeat is severe, but it is a great pity he was nob sent to the asylum twenty years ago if he wrs really a " maniac," as Dr. Waddmgton aa'd, at that time. Hufortut a'ely, there is, I believe, no criminal lunatic asylum in the colony, so that this man, with his violent temper, is turned lose among numerous insane people, the great majority of whom are perfectly harmless, and ought not to be brought in c intact t&t with a murderer,—Yours, etc., Waikato.
