THE BRITISH NAVY.

London, March 8. TnE navy estimates were to-day submitted to the House of Commons. It is proposed to vote sums amounting to £23,778,000. It is proposed to construct three new battleships, four cruisers, four sloops of war, and increase the perssnnel of the navy by 6340 men.

The total number of war vessel* in course of construction in 1898-99 will be twelve battleships, thirtytwo cruisers, and forty-one torpedo cruisers.

Owing to the recent engineers' strike the four battleships and two cruisers authorised to be built have not yet been commenced, and the effect of the strike has been to much retard the work on other vessels.
