NARROW ESCAPE FROM FIRE.
(by telegraph—own correspondent). Te Awamutu, Last Night. The dwelling and shop of Messrs Gibson Bros., butchers, narrowly escaped total destruction by tire at four o'clock this afternoon. It appears that the firm's book-keeper, Mr McWilliam, was boiling some tar in one of the back rooms. He left the room for a few minutes and on returning found the whole place in flames. Tin alarm was soon given and a crowd assembled. A strong bucket brigade, under the supervision of Constable Carroll, was quickly at work aud the flames were suppressed. Very little damage was done, but had the fire got a stronger hold nothing could have saved the building and the greater portion of the township. The Post Office is situated quite close, also Lewis' Hotel and Mr Rickett's dwelling hou-c.
