CABLE SUMMARY.
DURING a great storm at Mem el, on the shores of the Baltic, a number of fishing vessels were driven ashore. Ten fishermen were drowned. As a result of the recommendation contained in the West Indian Sugar Commission's report, the British Government has granted £120,000 for improvements in the sugar industries in the West Indies. The Standard states that the German negotiations with the Chinese Government for railway concessions in the Shantong Peninsula have been completed, and the terms of the agreement will shortly be published. Mr Geddes suggests that the colonial Governments should secure space in the fish market at Smithfield now vacant, which he considers well adapted for the display and sale of produce. The disturbing news which has recently heen published from many quarters of the globe has had a depressing effect on the Stock Exchange. Princess Stephanie, widow of the Crown Prince of Austria, is suffering from inflammation of the lungs, and is in a critical condition. Dr. Calmette, of Saigon, a pupil of Dr. Pasteur, has discovered a-cure for snakebite by means of bi-chloride of gold. Dawson, who stands third on the list of English billiard players, has arranged a match with Weiss, the Australian champion, to be played on the 28th instant, 18,000 up, Weiss receiving 10,000 ; stake, £IOO a-side. The death is announced of Edmund Tattersall, head of the great firm of horse auctioneers and proprietor of the famous sporting rooms at Knightsbridge. A cyclone devastated the Comoro group of islands, many of the inhabitants being killed. A duel between Signors Cavalotti and Mat'olo, members of the Chamber of Deputies, resulted in Cavalotti being killed.
