It is expected that the cargo of the Mataura will be saved. Salvage operations have been resumed. The Parliamentary election to fill the vacancy in the Cricklade division of Wiltshire, caued by Professor Hopkinson accepting the principalship of Owens College, Manchester, resulted in the return of Lord Fitzmauriee, a Libeial, by a majority of 489 over Viscount Emlyn, the Conservative candidate. Mr Finucane, the Queensland commercial agnt in Europe, reports that there are prospects of opening direct trade between Italy and Queensland. Justice Sir R. Romer, in Court, made an order directing S r Robert Peel to restore to the trusties of the estate sixteen valuable pictures which had been removed by Sir Robert from Drayton Manor, the family seat, t.ear Turnworth. The commission appointed by the Sultan to inquire into the recent outrage at C/akub released 127 persons, who were at rested in connection with the affair. The commissioners deny that the prisoners were tortured. Captain Schomberg, of the warship Victorious, is to be tried by court-mar-tial in connection with the grounding of the vessel at Port Said. In the House of Commons, Mr Curzon said that Great Britain had suggested to Germany that it would be better not to release Mataafa until the rebellion in Samoa had been quelled.
