It was utian'mously agreed to hold the sports en March 16th, the same date as hst year. The secretary reported a credit bahnco in bank of £i 15s, and it was agreed to ac'd this to the prize mouey at the next sports. This will make the cup an I Eome of the other events of considerable value, and 1 think the C ub may expect to see gojd fields, as it is thought tli.t some of the crack runners will come up from the Waikato, and if they do they cau be sure of bHng fairly tre>ted. The programme of the sports will be out in a few days. Native School.—The opening of th. 9 new native school here was celebrated by a picnic on Saturday, 29th ult. Quite a considerable sum was raised by subscriptions among the Europeans and natives in the district, aud the children were given a good day's outing aud a first-cla3s " blow out "of cakes, etc. A lot of interest was taken by both children and parents in the races and ether sports, the wrestling especially causing a lot of excitement. Very useful prizes were given to the wiunersof the different events, and at the close every child vrzu given a present of some fort. The picnic committee found, after paying all expense?, that they had a pound "to the good, and this was handed over to the school committee to go towards a picnic ami prizes next year. Our schoolmaster (Mr Harris) has already made himself] very popular in the district, and seems to have the knack of managing our rpther wild and unruly small boy. A most enjoyable social was held in the evening after the picnic, for which Mr Perry Uindly gave his hall free. About half-a-dozen songs were sung, and dancing was kept up very close to Sunday morning.
A Scare.—Quite a scare was caused here the other day by a Maori house being burned at Hangatiki, as it wa9 thought that some of Mahuki's " angels " were "on the loo3e again." There seems to have been no ground for belief, and the excitement has quJP** cooled down again.—(Own Correspondent).
