HEAVY GALE.
On Tuesday and ye terelay a heavy gale blew at intervals iu the Waikato, but with the exception of a short shower about S o'clock on Tuesday e.vei ing, no rain fell. We have not heard of any damage beyond the blowing down of a few trees, and a considerable amount of damage has been done to the orchards through ut the fl'slri t. The gale seems to have been rrclty general through' ut the colony. At Wellington a violent blast came up suddenly from the South withoat any warning on Tuesday afternoon, and the streets we;e filled with dti-t as with a fog. The roof was blown eff an omnibus. The barometer fell 10 points in five minutes. The ship Canterbury, which was just leaving the harbour, had her sails considerably damaged before the crew could secure them. Only a shower or two fell Unfortunately, two fishermen (brothers), named Rosseau, were caught in the gale when off Makaia. They tried to beat in, but their I oat capsiz d and they were both drowned. In Canterbury i n Tuesday a gale was experienced in the afternoon, anel great damage has been done to-orchards. Towauls evening a steady downpour of rain started. From Purediti similar weather is reported, also great damage to orchards.
