RAGLAN.

School Committee.—A meeting of the Raglan School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening, January 19th. The tender of A. Rendell for cleaning the schoolroom at £2 5s was accepted. The question of holding the annual school sports came up for consideration, and it was resolved that Messrs Henry and Smith be empowered to make the necessary arrangements. Congregational Manse.—A public meeting was held on Monday, January 17th, to consider the erection of a manse for the Congregational minister, and to select and purchase a site. After considerable discussion the following gentlemen, Mo-era W. J. Smith, Conradi, Hibbs and Williams, were elected to act along with the following members of the church committee: Messrs Nicholson, A. Smith, Saunders, and Misses Bay and Johnstone. Already the committee have received promises of £SO towards the erection of the mume. Auction.—On Saturday Mr W. J. Hunter sold by austion on the premises the furniture and effects of the Rev. C A. Lyon, who is leaving the district for Gore. Good prices were realised. Rough on Rats —At a settler's house about four miles from Raglan, a packet of " Rough on Rats " fell into a flour bag, and the flour was partaken of by the family and several members were seriously ill in consequence. Fortunately the remedies applied prevented fatal consequence?. Some people are very careless in handling poisons. Visitors.—There is a large number of visitors staying here just now. Amongst them I have noticed Mr and Mrs Cox, of Hamilton, and Mr and Mrs W. J. Hunter and family, of Ohaupo. Boat Accident. - A few days back, when pro.eeding up the harbour in his boat, Mr C. Mathew had an unpleasant experience. A sudden squall struck the boat and upset her. He managed to get on the keel, and intended trying to swim to the land when the tide went down. Fortunately. Messrs Vercoe and Coxwere out fishing and saw the accident from a considerable distance. They at once proceeded to his assistance and took him on board their boat and brought him back to Raglan. Mail Service.-On Saturday a petition to the Chief Postmaster was being signed by a large number of settlers, asking that the mail coach which leaves here on Tuesdays and Fridays should be timed to reach Frankton Junction in order to enable passengers and mails to reach Auckland on the same day.—(Own Correspondent).
