CRICKET.

ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA. The third test match was commenced at Adelaide on Friday. The colonials went to the wickets first and remained there until the call of “ time ” on Saturday, when they had 552 runs to their credit with nine wickets down. The following arc the scores

The Secretary of the Te Aroha Cricket Club has been instructed to write to the secretaries of the Cambridge, Hamilton, Wailii and Waitckauri Clubs with the idea of arranging matches. The refusal of Giffen to play for Australia in the test matches has occasioned much comment in cricket circles throughout Australasia. Giffen says he “ cannot afford ” to play on the terms offered, and so he prefers to stand out. In referring to the matter “Mid-On,” in the Melbourne Age, writes :—“Let it be known to all whom it may concern that the proffered terms under which Mr George Giffen, the South Australian amateur, 4 cannot afford ’ to play for his country are as follow; —£10 per match for his services, in addition to first-class return fares, with sleeping cars, from Adeleide, and together with 12s per day to cover hotel bill (and to be paid during the whole period of travelling, as well as while practising and playing), and in addition £5 per week to 4 cover loss of time ’ while he is away from his office. These arc the conditions under which Giffen has been invited to 4 give up his occupation and his salary ’ while the test matches are being played."
