HEAVY GALE IN CANTERBURY.

A MAN KILLED. (ill TELEORArH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT). Christchurch, I ast Night. Friday's gale was felt very severely at Hanmer Plains. On Friday two. coaches from Jolly's Pass had a narrow escape of being blown over. The sanatorium had one chimney blown down and the ceiling damaged. About 10 o'clock the roof of JLanmert's private hotel appeared to be giving way, and some shearers who were on their way home stopped to give assistance. Harry Brown went on the roof to fasten some logs, when a terrible gust lifted him and carried him oft' his feet. He fell on his head on the lawn. He never spoke again, and died on Saturday morning. He was an unmarried man. The side of Lahmert's house was stripped with the same gust.
