OHAUPO.

BAiJi.-On Friday nitdit the young men of Ohaupo gave a ball in the Public Hall to dance the o'd year out and the cew one in. What a great difference of opinion there is on that subject. Some pass the supreme moment (the death of the old year) in weeping and prayer, some in dancing and singing, and others dead drunk, or next door to it. Man is certainly a curious animal. What a wonderful sight it would be, if we could put a number of people in a large hal>, and ask each group to carry out their ideas with regard to the keeping of watch night. How different each group would act, and how edifying to the beholder, however, I'm not going to moralise, I'll leave that to the Editor, wishing him and his staff, " devil," and all, " A Happy New Year." Well, I am wandering from the ball room, where so many happy young people met to enjoy themBelve". About thirty couple were present from the sutrounding districts. Mr A. Jones supplied the music, assisted by Miss McLean on the p'aro, and Mr D. Turnwald made a eitioieut M.C. Refreshments were handed round and BDveral songs were snug during the evening, dancing was kept up till the dawn appeared, when all returned home, having thoroughly clj ycd themselves, to commence a;,'tin their labours for another year. I trust they may see many happy rehires of the season. KuiiKiiii Spokts. "Well on New Year's Hay I, in company w ith a fewfriends, drove .to Kihikihi, the oldest. frontier town in the VVaikalo, t'j witiesa the sport?. Yea, iporta under a roasting sun ;my goodness was it not hot; how I did wish to have a pisttbeard card, with the following words, in large type, 'Yes, very hot- indeed," as by that means one would save a deal of talking, as it was uliuost too fatiguing to open one's mouth, except, of course, to admit the 1» monade and whisky. .Well the Kihikihi people can be jus:ly proud of their township and domain ; the latter is big enough to make a fair racecourse, and as it is the centre of a considerable and increasing population, the Domain Board considered thfy were justified in erecting a grandstand the' total cost of which when finished will be about £l2O. The dimensions arc 2Gft by 17ft, and capable of seating 150 people. The revenue from all sources received by the Board will be about £2O a year, which will more than pay inteic t on any outlay th.-y may require to beautify their grounds. The authorities are certainly justified in making this domain attractive, as Kihikihi is likely to become a popular resoit for sport, if 1 may judge liy the crowd w ho attended on Saturday. As a ground for matches and spnts of all kinds I think it would be hard to beat iu tie Waikato. Thy Te Awamutu Band were in attendance, ami helped to put a little 1 fc into the halt roasted people. 1 must congratulate the band on the progress they have made in thelast two months, and last but hot'least th».y have secured the services ot a good kettle drummer, which U a great acquisition to any band. Your Correspondent, of course, will give you the details of the sports. I only give my impres aioni as a visitor. I wish the Kihikihi people every success in their endeavour to make their township attractive.— (Own Correspondent).
