There will be no publication of this journal on Tuesday next, 28th inst. The paper will be delivered as usual on 'Saturday next (Christmas Day). On our fourth page this morning will be found a number of letters to the Editor. The Secretary of the Waikato Hospital desires to thank Mr P. LeQuesne for a donation of Christmas cheer for the patients at the institution. The certificates and medals awarded at the late Cambridge Industrial Exhibition were presented iu the Public Hall on Monday evening by Archdeacon Willis. The Banks in "Waikato will be closed on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday next, and also on the Saturday, Monday and Tuesday following for the Christinas and New Year holidays. In consequence of permission being refused, the drawing for prizes in connection with Miss Macnaughtan's Christmas tree will not. take place, and the money icceivcd for tickets will be returned upon application being made. The Petitions Committee has reported with regard to the petition of George Giles Wilson far injuries received by phosphorous, which was buried by an Inspector of Stock, " That the petitioner has no claim upon the colony." A poll of the ratepayers in the Raglan County will be taken on Saturday, 15th Januny, at the va:ious polling pLcci specified in an advertisetmnt on our fourth page, to decide re the rating on unimproved values. Those who aro willing to assist in the Christmas decorations at St. Peter's Church, Hamilton, arc requested to meet at the Sunday-school to-morrow. Donations of flowers and greeneiy arc also requested. School picnics are just now the order of the day, most of the schools celebrating the commencement of the Christmas holidays in this way. The Hukanui children spent a most enjoy able day at Woodlands yesterday, and today the Murshmeddows pupils will have an on ling. In Mr Ruge's shop window at Cambridge may be feeu two ripe peaches the first of the season. They are of the variety known as the Downing, and wrie grown by Mr John Sharp, the well-known nurseryman. He thinks they will be a distinct advance on Brigg's Red May. On Tuesday a young man named Westney was admitted to the Waikato Hospital, having met wHi an accident at Otorohanga. While assisting in shuntina his baud was caught between the bailers of two trucks, with the result that it was badly crushed, but so far it has not been deckled wkether it will be necessary to amputate it or not. The Hamilton Brass Band, under Bandmaster Munro, will play the following programme en the green adjoining tho Hamilton Hotel, to-morrow (Friday) evening, 24th inst., viz ;-March, " Antipodes' ; waltz," Myrinc " ; selection, ' ; Star of India " ; cornet polka, '• Queen of Beauty "; song, " Ora Pro Nobis " ; Schottische, " Aberlcy " ; selection, " Far Maid of l\rlh " ; march, " Majolica." We have received from Mr M. A. Going, the local agent of the Royal Insurance Compaay, the almanac for 1808, issued by that company. In this a departure has been made from the usual form, and the calender is given with a blank epace opposite each day for engagements, there being a week on a sheet. This arrangement should make the publication a very popular one among business meu, and is a distinct advance on the simple date sheets generally publifcheel,
The Wesleyans of Cambridge responded iu a very liberal manner to a special appeal that was made last Sunday on behalf of the loval current account, v Liuh 1 as been goinc the wrong way of late. The sum of £27 was collected at the two services. Sunday n-xt being St. Stephen's D.iy, there will be divine service with celebration of Holy Communion at, St. Stephen's Church, Tamahere, at 11 a.m. There will be no service at St. Stephen's on Christmas Day. On Christmas morning '.he Holy Communion will be celebrate d at (Ctiristchurch) Ohaupo, at 11 a.m. At the Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, at 11 o'clock this morning, Mr Ford, of Waitekauri, will 1)2 maraicd to Miss Davis, daughter of Mr J. Davis, of Kirikiriroa. Both the parties arc \vc 1 l known in this district and they have the best wishes of their many friends for their future happiness. Yesterday rain threatened for some time, but although there were some heavy downpours in isolated parts of the district, there was no general fall. At Napier, a 3 wiil be seen by our telegrams this morning, there was heavy fain, the cricket match, Hawkc's Bay V. Canterbury, having lo be postponed in cons'queuce. When the supplementary estimates wire under consideration Mr Firani moved that the vote of £SOO (si-;) for the beet industry be struck out. The motion was lo,t by 25 to 21 ami the vote carried. Tncro is probably an error in telegraphing the amount, but it does not matter much either way, as the Bill granting the bonus is practically dead. On the petition of Murdoch McLean and others, contractors fur the Makarau Tunnel, for compensation for losses sus'ained in consequence of misleading specifications and an erdcr by the Government to remove certaiu supports in the tunnel, the Railways Committee rcpoit that Messrs McLean sustained a loss of £7OOO and recommend they be paid £SOOO, in full of all demand. The many farmers and travellers who have frcqnentcd and stayed at the Ohaupo Hotel will regret to hear of tbe death of poor old Tom, the ostler. He caught cold about ten days ago, which developed into acute bronchitis. He was up and about his usual work on Sunday morning, but taking a turn for the worte he was taken to the Waikato Hospital on Monday and died tho following day. Yes : old Tom will be missed. Those who handed over their horses to his care could be sure they would be well looked after. Death seems pretty busy around our district lately. The saddest of all was Mrs Thos. Weal, who left a large young family. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all their friends and neighbours.—(Ohanpo Correspondent).
