NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
(BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Gisborne, Last Night. A narrow escape from drowning was experienced last evening by Mr Townley (the Mayor), Capt. Thompsou (harbourmaster), and Messr3 Kiiig (harbour engineer) and Hastie (an employee of the Harbour Board), who was engaged in taking soundings in a flat-bottomed boat at the entrance to the river. The boat was swamped and the four occupants prtcipitatcd into the water. Messrs Townley and Hastie managed to grasp a line thro it'll to them, and were hauled out of the water. Capt. Thompson was pluckily rescued by his son, wuilst Mr King clambered on to the bottom of the overturned bout, which went floating down the river. Someone jump'd off the breakwater and assisted him to land on the pier.
