ESCAPE OF A PRISONER
On Wednesday a prisoner named William Knox, who is well-known in Waikato, escaped from the North Head Gaol. He was undergoiog a term of two years' hard labour, having been sentenced in June last for breaking into the shop of Mr G. Garrett, Newton, aud stealing a quantity of goods therefrom. It appears that Knox was seen to enter the torpedo shed at Fort Cautley where dinner was served, but some time afterwards he was missed, Knox having cleverly hidden himself from view for a second or so, darted through the open door, and secreted himself outside. The alarm was raised at once, and every search made, but without success, and up to last' night he had not been captured. It is reported that Knox was seen walking along the road wearing a pair of trousers and coat that he had stolen out of the torpedo shed and a towel over his head as if he had come from a bathe, but since that time all trace of him has disappeared.
