PIRONGIA.
The Racfs.—On Saturday evening last a public meeting was held in the Alexandra Hotel, for the purpose of appointing a committee for our forthcoming annual race meeting, to be held on Box-ing-day, Mr J, G. Berry, scur., was called to the chair, aud read the last year's balance-sheet, which showed a deficit of Sd ; as, however, there is a sum of live pounds of unpaid subscriptions yet due, and thought to be recoverable, the accounts were passed unanimously. The next business was the appointment of officers, when the following gentlemen were duly proposed and selected for the positions respectively : President : Mr F. YV. Lang, M.H.R, Judge : Mr J. O. Berry, senr. Starter : Mr G. Berry. Clerks of Course : Messrs Beet and .Smith. Clerk of Scales : Mr A. Ahicr. Secretary and Treasurer: Mr K. 11. Aubin. Handicappers : The Committee, exclusive of horse-owners. Stewards : Messrs G. Miles, W. H. James, G. Finch, YV. Searancke, K. Gam.onsway, J. Hodgson, J. Ormsby, junr., A. Ormsby, W. Hughes, C. H. Reynolds, J. Papesch, W. H. Grant and YV. Macky. It was also proposed aud carried that the advertisements of programme, etc., be sent to Tin-: W.aikato Akgus. Examination.— At the school examination lately held here by Inspector Dickinson, all the scholars with one exception successfully passed their various standards, for which great credit is due to their teaoher, Miss E. Wills. PkomitSettlement.—The compltints made by settlers, outside of those who make fruit-growing their business, are always thut the difficult thing is to get the money from the Auckland salesmen without having t.» make at times several applications for it, and so your own has also found to bo the case. I should therefore with the editor's permission, although he will perhaps look upon it as an adv., like to give credit where credit is due, and I feel certain it will be thankfully read by a great many of your subscribers. On Wednesday last there was consigned to Messrs A. Tooman and Co. a number of r-ase.s of fruit for sale, and on Saturday afternoon by mail arrived the cheque for the amount realized, to the surprise of the recipient, who could only manage to say to two or three friends "Come and have a drink."— I (Own Correspondent).
