ELEVEN HOUSES DESTROYED AT WAIHI.

Another fire broke out at "Waihi, on Saturday morning. It originated in the premises occupied by Miss Jo.I, and was first discovered by Dr. Wright, who ,vas returning home after visiting a patient. An alarm was given and the population speedily turned out, and did all in their power to stay the flames and stive property. They could do little from want of water to check the flames, so devoted themselves principally to saving property. A band of active workmen, led by .Mr Flctt, succeeded in preventing the fire spreading to Mrs Gibbon's board-ing-house. The following h the list of casualties and the insurances so far as they could be ascertained :

D. McLean's billiard-room, billiard table, etc., .CIOO, and building £IOO in the Norwich Union oilice. Miss dob's dressmaking premises, owned by Mr J. Newdick : Stock insured for £'2oo in the New Zealand office. J. Newdiek's bakery : £lB5 on stock, building and effects in the United office. Miners' Union Hall.

W. TyreU's .saddlery and K MeLeay's bootmaker's establishments. Mr MeLeay's stock was insured for £IOO. Mr Walter Brown's hairdressing place was uninsured.

Mil'. Vugkr's butciiety, which had just been erected, at a cost of .C-iOO, was insured in the United otiice for Ci:so. Laskcr, chemist : Stock insured for CIOO in New Zealand olliee.

Mrs Donnelly : Shop was insured for £IOO ; stock-in-trade, £IOO in New Zealand ollice.

With the exception of Miss J oil's and McLsiui'm stocks nearly all the goods were removed from the other buildings destroyed. The men all worked well, but amongst those who distinguished themselves were Mesas. Johnston, Henderson and Wrigley. W. C'orbett was badly burned on the hand in endeavouring to save property. It is estimated that the damage caused will amoeut to •iiiite £3OOO.
