The usual monthly mail, via San Francico, will be despatched from Waikato on Friday next, at the usual hour.

The Waihora, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney this morning, brought 100 Austrians for the gumfields.

At the Hamilton Auction Mart to-morrow, Mr John Knox will hold an unreserved sale of furniture, etc., on account of a lady who is leaving the district.

Messrs McNicol and Co. will hold a sale of furniture at the residence of Mrs lloltby, Morrinsville, tomorrow (Wednesday), commencing at 2 o'clock sharp.

We remind our readers of the clearing sale to be held by Mr \V. J. Hunter on account of Mr H. J. Paton at Uautapu to-morrow (Wednesday), commencing at 12 o'clock. A number of domain reserves and borough endowments will be offered for lease by public auction by Mr John Knox at the Hamiltou Auction Mart on Saturday, December 11th. Particulars are given in an advertisement appearing on our fourth page.

The secretary to the Hamilton Library Committee informs us that he has received per Mr F. Lucas the sum of £1 Os toward the building fund of the library. This is the proceeds of the Panda of Hope jubilee entertainment on the 15th inst.

The annual meetings of the County Councils will be held at noon tomorrow for the purpose of electing the chairmen for the coming twelve months and the appointment of representatives on the Hospital Board. The Borough Councils also meet at the same time for the latter purpose.

A telegram sent through on Saturday from Opotiki states that Mr Seagar Buekland passed through that place en route for Tauranga and Waikato with a large inob of first-class hordes in splendid condition. He reports the Gisborne-Opotiki Road in better order for travelling than be has seen it. before.

Since the discovery of Hawthorne's murder it has been suggested that Laidley, wdio disappeared some months age), may have met a similar fate. Several persons, however, who knew the missing man, recognised him ou the steamer going to Sydney, and added sonic details which, if true, are quite sufficient to explain his disappearance.

At the meeting of the Whatawdiata Race Committee, held on Saturday eveninir, there was a good attendance, Mr W. W. Iligginsoun iu the chair. Arrangements were made to further improve the course, including new hurdles, etc. Mr Thcs. Kempthorne was elected as committeeman and clerk of course. Good reports were received respecting the entries for the races, and given the cordial co-operation and assistance that the Club has always received from the surrounding districts, everything points to another successful race meeting on New Yeur's Lay. Thursday, 16th December, beingthe first anniversary of the induction of the Rev. J. M. Mitchell to the ministerial charge of the Hamilton Presbyterian Church, the laelies and managers of the congregation bad arranged to celebrate the occasion by holding a soiree, etc., in the Volunteer Hall. The Anglican authorities,however,have since announced a sa'e of work for that date, and, in order not to clash therewith, the former have decided to hold their function on the Thursday previous, 9th December. The anniversary services will be held on Sunday, 12th December, when the Rev. Scott-West-, of St. David's, Auckland, will preach. Pull particulars will be advertised later.
