London, October IS. In a letter dealing with the J ngineers' strike, Mr Chamberlain expressed deep sympathy for the loss and misery caused by the strike. He says be is convince! that unsolicited interference on the part of individuals must prove harmful. The Archbishup of Canterbury, who was appealed to states there would not be the slightest chance of success by mediation on the part of the Church. An extensive lock-out of cotton operatives is threatened. The employers of hands, working 2,800,000 spindles, have agreed to stop work unless a o per cent, reduction in wages is accepted. The Boilermakers' Executive has oidered the London members who went on strike to return to work.
