Debating Society. The fortnightly meeting of the Debating and Social Society was held in the Hall on Friday, tho 17th inst. The attendance was smaller than usual. The subject set down for the evening was the reading of " The Journal." The articles, which were read by Messrs Bradbury and Wells, were cot only numerous, but alto of a t;ood quality. " The Journal " opened with a few amusing advertis merits. The conundrum column was well filled, the answers containing not a few local hits. The leading article was well written, and gave beginners FOine gocd advice on essay-writing. The articles were as follows : Story, " Grim Truth " ; poem, " Fancy " ; story, " How Miss Skrimskirts Won A Husband." "The Boy Nuisance," " A Day's Catth Shooting," Poem (an extract) " The Isle Of The Scots," extract, "The Life Of Napolfon 11. " (which appeared in the children's column), " Ode To My Favourite Calf," and " My First Experience ill Ngaruawhia." As the hour was late, several articles had to be held over. The next evening will be devoted to Essays on sevtral set subjects. CiNKHATOOKAriiK.-On Monday, the 20th, we were treated with a Cinematograph"! and Phonograph entertainment. As this was the first appearance of the Cinematographe in Ngaruawahia, the Hall was Well rilled. The audience, judging by the frequent outbursts of PUrse, were well pleased with the extion.—(Own Correspondent).
