HAMILTON LIBRARY COMMITTEE.
A meeting: of the Hamilton Library Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening. The following members were, present:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Dey) in the chair, Messrs Fairer, Bradley, R. Parr, R. F. Sandes, Dr. Kenny, Stevens, Kdgecumbe, Swarbriok and Barton. A letter was read from Messrs Wild man and Lyell soliciting an order for books LIIiRAKV Bali,. —Mr Stevens, llie sectetary, brought up his report, .showing a balance in hand of JL'll Os lid. in referring to Uie amount, ho regretted that it was not larger, but a variety of unforeseen circumstances had arisen, which had increased the committee's outlay, and consequently the results did not reach their anticipations. The members present ho \\cver expressed themselves as quite satisfied with the efforts of the Ball Committee, and a resolution was unanimously carried to adopt the report and to accord a hearty vote of thanks to the following ladies and gentlemen who had given such valuable assistance in connection with the ball, namely, Me-sdames Browning, Biggs, Oldham, Jolly, Coatcs, Kenny and Stevens, and to Dr. Kenny and Messrs R. Parr and Steven". Dramatic Entertainment*. Mr Swat brick said that he had but an interim report to lay before the meeting. Their first entertainment at Hamilton had grossed .C'2S 13s, but as the initial expenditure, including a lot of scenery, etc., had been heavy, amounting to .CIU us, a balance of £l2 83 remained. The entertainment in Cambridge had netted CG 4s—one half of which would be handed over to the Cambiidge Library under the terms of arrangement with the Cambridge Library Committee. Continuing, Mr Swarbriek said he and his company intended to give two more entertainments, ni:d at a moderate estimate he expected to add to the funds a further sum of £2O. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Swarbriek and the members of his dramatic company for the valuable assistance already rendered, and for the fm ther promise of the two other entertainments which lie had referred to. SUIISOKU'TIOXS T 0 BOIMUNIi FtJXD.— Mr Fa-rer handed in a sum of t'(i <Ss which he had collected, and which was specially donated to the building fund. He also reported that he had further promises to the extent of about another £5.—A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Fairer for his services in this direction. —ln addition to the above, Mr Swarbriek reported that he had on his list Mr Maunder '2ls and Mr 11. Kerr ,".s, and Mr Stevens slid he also had additions to make to the li*r. of subscribers, namely—Mr Atkinson (Gas Co.) L'.'l .'h ; Mr Jsaac Coatcs, £2 2s ; Mr S. Tucker, i'l : Mr T. Chappcll, £l. Countky SußscKHiuiis. —Mr Earrcr said that he had often heard country subscribers compla'ii that the rule limiting the number of books to be issued, pressed rather inconveniently upon subset ibera living at a distance, and in order to meet this question, he proposed that until the Libraiy Building is erected, that country subscribers should be allowed to take out one new hook and one old book in place of, as at present restricting it to one book only.—This proposition met with the approval of the Committee ami was carried.
