THE DRINK QUESTION.
TO Tllli I'DITOIi
Sm, —I did not object to the senttneo quoted from Luke, but to the way in which it whs applied by your correspondent, who inferred that because a person could not agree with Prohibitionists, "It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he cast into the sea." As an auti-Prohibitionist, 1 took exception to this method of dealing with the culprit, and urged that moral suasion would solve the drink question batter than compulsion, but instead of " compulsion ; ' 1 used the word " foi'.'f." I am then gravely informed that I have " written nonsense," as moral suasion is comprised of "force of precept, force of example,'' etc., and is consequently a "force" in itself. There is certainly logic in the contention, and it will apply all round. In your correspondent's first letter he said : " It is true we have no record of Christ using J'urve in «>iy imy : it would be contrary to the spirit and tenor of His life's work," which, on the \\ritcr"a own reasoning, is equivalent to saying that Christ neither used the "Force of precept " nor the " I'vrce of example" during His ministry. If your correspondent is just, he must admit that, in face of above, I am not the only one who has " written nonseuse " during this controversy. When writers have to resort to quibbles, it is time they laid aside their pens. In order to get hack to our subject I ask : If, as your correspondent admits, moral suasion is doing the work so well, why does he desire Prohibition V—l am, etc., Rfchabite.
