A body of Tureg Arabs, a tribe which holds the country south of Timbuctoo and east of the Niger, surprised a detachment of French troops at Dire, ou the Niger, scattering them and killing the commanding officer. A number of French capitalists have arranged to establish a shipbuilding yard on the Eiver Neva, in Kussia, for the construction of the largest battleships. The Belgian expedition to Graham Land, in the Antarctic regions, under the command of Lieutenant de Gerlacbe, left Belgium yesterday. The steamer Belgica, conveying the expedition, was saluted by the Dutch and United States warships, as she sailed down the river Scheldt. Qhe Cobden Club has conferred its geld medal upon Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Premier of Canada. The Comte de Turin, who seriously wounded Prince Henry of Orleans in the recent duel, was accorded a great reception by the populace on his return to Italy. He has been congratulated by King Humbert. Some of the French newspapers insinuate that tbe Comte de Turin wore a cuirass as a protection in the duel. Prince Henry of Orleans is recovering from the wounds he received. The American torpedo flotilla has sailed for the Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this move is supposed to be that the United States may be in readiness for the development of events in Cuba in tbe spring.
