* The Waikato Argus Office, Monday. HAMILTON STOCK MARKETS. At the monthly sale held in the Hamilton Borough Yards, on Thursday, a large number of stock was brought forward, considerably more than could be properly drafted, the inadequacy of the accommodation provided for cattle being again very manifest. In this connection a petition to the borough authorities to have the yards enlarged was being freely signed by settlers at the sale ; and, in view of the approaching spring sales, no time should be lost. A full supply of beef was brought in, including some well fatted steers and heifers from Mr J. J. Grahtsm, of Woodside, his steers making the top price of £6 10s, Mr S. Steele being a shilling or two behind for a nice pen of steers. Generally speaking beef was in good demand ; out of about SO head but few were passed, a number being taken for Paeroa and Auckland. Young cattle were in fair request, but dairy cows, of which a large number was in, were dull of sale. The sheep pens were full of a good class, but fat sheep were none too brisk of sale. A line of very choice long-woolled wethers from Mr W. Chitty made 13s 3d, the highest price obtained at Hamilton for some time past. Pigs were only moderately represented, and in good demand. Prices were: —Calves, 20s to 265; ISmonths steer?, 30s to 3Sa ; do. heifers, 26s ; two-year-old steers, £2 6s to £2 14s; three-year-old steers, £3 5s to £4 7s 6d ; two-year-old heifers, £2; empty •cows, 30s to £2 8s : bulls, £1 to £2 15s'; stags, £1 10s to £3 10s ; fat cows, £3 5s to £4 17s ; fat steers, £3 to £6 10s ; da : ry cows, poor and aged, £2 to £3 10s ; good cowe, £4 to £5. Messrs Arthur Tooman and Co.'.s Mahkkt ReI'ORT. —Since our last the produce market has been kit very bare, particularly of potatoes and onions. Business done has been of a satisfactory nature, including fulfilment of Island orders, which have been larger than usual. Poultry and pigs have been in demand far beyond supply, the latter having many inquiries at high values. Fruit has been in abundant supply from all ports, nnd the market is somewhat over-stocked. Grain shows no change. Butter : Supplies of dairy are decreasing, and a better demand has existed for factory, while kegged lots remain immovable. Beyond repacking and shipping Home, we can tee no outlet for this line. Eggs lower in value, although supplies show but little increase. Bacon, hama and cheese met improved demand. Poultry scarce at good values. Pigs in unlimited demand. Mr Alexander Aitken reports as fol'ows : —The chief features of the produce market during the past week has been the scarcity of Canterbury potatoes, and consequent increased value, the high price of onions, and the fall ot dairy butter and eggs. Local supplies of Derwents were completely exhausted, and I placed 350 sacks to arrive on Monday and Tuesday next. Island orders were heavier than usual and in many cases had to be cut down and carried forward until the next boat leaves. I have alto to report an increased demand f( r all kirds of seed potatoes, and should advise customers to book all orders at once, as there is every appearance of a sharp rise in values, especially for the better sorts. Fruit from Tasmania, Sydney, and the Islands has been in heavy supply, but owing to the increased demand, I succeeded in placing 300 cases of varied character, besides bananas, etc., at full market values. Poultry has further improved, and I had to carry over large orders, pending expected arrivals next week. Cauliflowers aud cabbages are in improved demand, and are realising very payable prices. The Ecmont F.vrmkks Union (Limited) report under date-Hawera, August 13th, 1597 :—On Monday, August 9lh, we held an unreserved clearing sale on account of Mr Geo. Muir, at the Okaiawa Yards, of his dairy stock, etc. The cows were a good line, but rather backward. The attendance was large, and bidding spirited, lesulting in satisfactory prices. We quote : Dairy cows, £3 5s to £7; heifeis, £2 12* 6d to £0; two-year-old heifers, £2 to £2 5s ; store cows, £1 Ss to £1 18s ; two aud a-half year-old steers, £3 15s. At Manaia, on the 11th August, fully the advertised number of stock was yarded. Competition was better than ot late, and as spring approaches we anticipate a bitter demand for all classes of stock. We quote : Dairy cows and heifers, £2 lis to £5 ; two-year-old heifers, £2 Is to £3 ; weaners, 15s to 17s. Sheep : E.V3S, empty, os 3d; woolly hoggets, 4s to 7s 3d. FROZEN MEAT. The New Zbaland Loan & Mercantile Agency Co.mpanv, Ltd , and Rsdcckp, report under date, London, July 9th:—There has been a fair demand for mutton of suitable weights during the past four weeks, and with small stocks values for these at the close show an advance of Jd per lb. Other descriptions are without material change, the incidence of the Juli'ee celebrations not having, as was generally anticipated, brought any increased demand. The arrivals of Australian have ccntinued large and being forced on the market Id and -}d per lb less money has had to be accepted. Consequent upon heavy arrivals, consisting largely of unsuitable weights, and with pressure on the part of certain large holders, values of lamb have materially given way and there is very weak "feeling on the market, amounting almost to a panic. With ample supplies of American beef, frozen has met a restricted demand, and values towards the middle of the month touched a very low point. There has recently been some improvement in the position. To-day's quotations at Smithficld arc : Prime selected New Zealand mutton, 2s 3d to 2s 6d per Sib ; average do., 2s to 2s 3d ; Australian mutton, light weights, Is 9d to Is 10d ; prime New Zealand lamb, 2s Od to 3s ; Australian do., (nominal), 2s 6d to 2s Sd ; Australian beef fores, Is 5d to Is 7d ; do. hinds, 2s fid to 2s Sd.
