Tenders fur erecting and repairing fences are invited by Mr K. J. Jribble, Newstead. The work will be shown tenderers to-morrow (Friday) at 10 a.m.

Recently a telcgium was published stating that an application had been made to the Court to prohibit the sale in the colony ot' Hume Nisbct's book, " The Scavenger." The following extract from the l)ook will give some idea of the writer's views on a section of the population of New South Wales :—" The fourth generation of Cornstalks are weeds who have grown up with white corpuscles in their blood instead of red ; lustful, yet lacking stamina ; malignant and sceptical of all that tends to raise humanity ; devoted to pleasure, ami regardless of the responsibilities of morality. Intrigue and wickedness arc to them the necessities of existence. Jibing and mockery and cold-blooded jests at all which the older generations reverenced are the ordinary subjects of their conversation ; crude, indecent and viperish, without a spark of true humour anil kindly instinct. They don't care for friends, nor do they consider a- benefactor ; they don't know what truth means, and as for faith and trust they arc sounds to laugh at. As for work or sticking to a friend, they couldn't see it and don't know what it means. They don't believe in a God ; they have no country to believe iu and no traditions to uphold."
