EARTHQUAKE IN INDIA.
PW » Calcutta, June 15. The earthquake oxporienced in Calcutta also affected Simla, Agra and Bombay. A terrible shock was felt at Darjceling, where many houses were destroyed. At Manipur large fissures opened in the ground, causing a number of ruilway bridges to collapse. In consequence the railway service has been stopped. In Bengol a train was overturned. The Jubilee rejoicings in Calcutta included the firing of a royal salute. This, however, has had to be abandoned owing to the damage caused by the earthquake and thv unsafe condition of very many of the buildings. June 16. Tuo proposed public Jubilee illuminations in Itidi-i have been abandoned. The money is to be devoted to relieving the victims of the earthquake. Immense dainago has been done, and considerable loss- of life has been caused by earthquakes in the province of Assam, where many roads and bridges have been rendered useless, owing to mud and sand spurting from the chasms opened in the roads. At Gauhati the railway has disappeared. At Shillong every building was levelled with the gronnd and many persons killed. At Goolpana a tidal wave followed the earthquake shocks.
