WAIHI NOTES.
[By Tiik Our-HAN]
Having been away for a little holiday last week, I was unable to give you a full account of the election of the local Echool committee, but co matter here is the gist of the business, which wrs cenducted in a very happy-go lucky manner. The old chairman took pes-
session of the chair without waiting to hear if anybody else was to te proposed. The secretary read the annual report in almost inuuliblc toms, and with his - back to the largest portion of his audience. The report was neither adopted, seconded, or put to the meeting. Tl.e chairman wgiud it as correct, so that matter was ended. He then was abcut to distiibntc voting papers when an elector wanted to know if it wai not within tie power of Hie mealing 'o make any more r.omimtio s, which was of course the direct thing. Only one fix oh candidate for the I oucnr was brought forward, and I am happy to state he was one amongst the number elected. The ballot box was tot locked bifi re the first one or two votes weic recoided. The ballot was closed to suit the convenience of 01 e of the scrutineers, and immediately afterwards seme fifty voters rol'ed up and wcie not able to record their \o:es, n n h 'o their disgu-t. Thf-y growled a good deal Lilt couldn't alter matters. So taken altogether we h"tl a p'ctty good time of it. ])i ring the san c week our Rifle Club had a mcctii t> to di-cuas financial matters ai.el devise ways and means of obtaining a further surp y of rifles. Just before the conclusion of the meeting Mrs A Tanner was i tioduced I y a member, and presented the Secretiny with a silver Clip, value ,C 7 !0-, to he competed for I y members of the Club, »li3 Xecre'a'y and committee to arrange open what lei ms it should be tiicd or. 8 1 '-! received a hearty vote of thank.-- from those, present and her health was drunk in foaming tankards. Last Sunday a monster demonstration and procession in aid of the sufferers by the Hawke's Bay flocds was to have taken place, but the weather was most unpropitious, so the afl'a'r was postponed until today I Wednesday), but there was even woisc weather, so another postponement has taken place to i.ext Sunday, when, with the lecal lists, there should l.e a good substantial sum raised. Our popular police officer (Mr J. Clifford) has left the force and district. His numerous friends met at J'anner'a Hull last Wednesday night to g"ve him a good send-off and present bun with a purse of fifteen sovereigns. The proceedings tool; the form of a smoke concert, and it was a most enjoyable affair.
