CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL SPORTS.
If there is one thing more than another that ill'! Cambridge inhabitants support in a liberal manner, it is the rclicnl sports. This year the children co'locte 1 £ 10, and trophies were piven by Messrs Marker, IJoyee, Kincaid, Robertson, Bond, Simpson, Davie* and Rugo, so the youngstois had something worth competing for. In addition to the sports a kind of picnic is also h'dd on the Recreation Reserve, in which the sports take place, so the children have do occasion to trouble about their "tucker." This year Mcsdaines MeNeisil and Rune had clnivc of tlrs put of the management, and they, with the as-nstanrc of the lady teachers, supplied the lHim< rous army of juveniles with food and drink as often as tiny liked to apply for it, which was pretty frequently. Notwithstanding the occasional showers and the almost continued drizzle, the whole of the events came oIF, and the finish s were very close in most of them, which rcfl'Cts geat credit on the handicapper, Mr J. Brown, who also made an efficient starter. Mr N. I. Hunt acted as judge the who'e day, but during that time he had several assistan's. The success of the sports is greatly diu to the great interest the tcuhers take, in them. The Misses Catnachan and Mandeno and Mr Lusk worked very hard and deserve special mention, for their duties were by no means light, and the wet made them harder llrin usual. Un behalf of the scholars we thank the subscribers to the prize fund, tlr se who dr.natod comestibles, and all win worked so hard to make the gathering a success. In the evening a social Mas held in the Oddfellows' Hall, at which some of the old attendants at the school met and fraternised for a time. There was one sad event that occurred during the afternoon, namely, the funeral (f little Genevieve Wilkinson, daughter of Mr Arnold Wilkinson, who had hem suddenly snatched away by an acute attack of laryngitis. Sue was only live years of age, but had attended the school for the past thice months, and was a g cat favourite. Whil-t the cortege passed the ground where the sports were held the children lined up on either side of the read, the girls on one side and the boys on the other, and stood bareheaded and in a most reverend manner till their little playmates' remains had been conveyed some distance up the road.
