RAGLAN RACES
The annual race meeting in connection with the above club, which took place on Moon's course, Waitetuna, on Friday last, was very successful. The weather was perfect, the sun was perhaps a little too warm, now and then, but towards afternoon fleecy clouds arose, which tended hugely to mitigate 1113 rays. Although there were not so many present as on some past occasions, the attendance was good, over '2OO persons being upon the couroe. The ladies were not so numerous perhaps as usual, those, however, who graced the meeting appeared to enter iuto the spirit of the racing. Sweeps witli them, were the order of the day. To Mr VV. J. Smith, the hon. secretary, all praise is due for the very successful manuer in which the meeting was conducted. There was not a hitch and no serious accident to mar the day's outiag.. Though the fields in one or two instances were small, the racing was very good and the finishes clo:e, which speaks well for the handicapper (Mr A. J. Storey). Mr E. C. Hotichen acted as starter, and was moat successful in getting the fields away together. Mr A. Litcliueld, clerk of the scales, and Mr W. McQueen, clerk of the course, Mr R. F. Lascelles, Judge, officiated and gave every satisfaction. Mr W, J. Smith, of Raglan, who had a licensed booth on the ground, appeared to be doing a good business throughout the day. In the way of eatables and temperance drinks, Mr J. Campbell was well patronised. The police were rc> presented by Constables Tapp and Cahill, but their servic s were not required. The book-makers were represented by Messrs Priest and Cohen, and those desirous of backing their fancy could do so. The following are the results of the various events : Handicap Hurdles of £8 10s.
