POPULATION OF THE WORLD.
Mu MoxilAlX, the famous statistician, lisia just published a book, "The Industries and Wealth of Nations," in which he gives some instructive figures. He shows that never has there been a period in which the people have multiplied so rapidly as in the last 05 years. Mr Mulhall gives the following remarkable
Europe has increased its population by C'2 per cent., but at the same time 30 millions of its inhabitants have emigrated to other lands. Between 1851 and 1893 8,601,000 have emigrated from the United Kingdom, 5,360,000 from Germany, and 4,000,000 from Italy. The other countries contributed 5,693,000 to this immense army, making a total of 26,674,000 souls. The bulk have gone to English-speaking lands. The United States absorbed 63 per cent., South America 13, the British colonies 11, and the rest of the world 13 percent. The second striking fact is the rapid growth of cities and towns. The gravitation of the rural population to the towns seems to have been universal. Ten millions in Europe alone have forsaken the country for the delights of town life. The result is that cities of over 50,000 souls show an increase of 470 per cent, in 60 years, as against an increase of only 70 per cent, outside the towns. The third great fact which stands out clear and distinct is the rapid extension of the English-speaking race. In 1831 English was spoken by 35 millions, now it is spoken by P2O millions. This fact is the more significant when we discover that in the 66 years there has been an increase of So million English speakers, as against P 25 millions for all the other languages of Christendom put together.
