RAGLAN.

Mutual Improvement Society.— The closing meeting of this society was held on Wednesday evening, December 9th, the President in the chair. It was resolved to exchange several magazines with the Waitetuna Society for distribution amongst the members. Mr La Trobe read a very interesting account of his trip to England some time back and graphically described the excellence of the voyage, the characters on board ship, the ports called at, the daily life and vocations of passengers and crew. Misses Randell, Hill, A. L. Pegler, Henry, Williams and the President all complimented Mr La Trobe on the reading of his interesting paper, and some of them described like experiences while journeying homewards by steamer. Insane. —A native named Pera Kiwi had a mental attack last week. He was engaged on board the " Amateur " steam launch in the early part of the week on her trip down to the Waingaro landing place. On arrival at Raglan he was placed for a short time in the lock-up for safety. He was liberated on the natives at Te Kopua undertaking to look after him He now appears to have nearly recovered. It is said that he had a similar attack some years back. Stingaree.—Mr Tattersall on Friday, whilst out fishing, secured a very large stingaree, perhaps the largest ever captured here. It measured 9 feet from tail to snout, and 4ft 9in across. Drought.—This district is suffering terribly from want of rain. There is a very poor lookout for the crops and the grass is dried up. —(Own Correspondent).
