The Waikato Argus GEORGE EDGECUMBE, Proprietor. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1896
So far as {ho districts which wo more particularly represent .arc concerned the election yesterday must ho looked upon as highly satisfactory. 3lr Land has been again returned, with a majority of over 1000 votes, and Mr IT i; it tints has succeeded in capturing the Pay of Plenty seat from Mr Kitm.v with NO majority. There are, however, two returns to come in, hut they cannot materially idler the result. As regards Will lea, to, the voting shows (hat (ho tloverument party put forth their full voting power, and were, no doubt, assisted to some extent by those, who in casting their votes only considered the temperance question. ()ii the other hand there were several of Mr Lands supporters who failed to vote owing to the feeling of certainty that lie wmdd lie returned. It may ho (hat Mr (Madman might have polled more than has (he I lev. Mr M'amvKi:. On the other hand, had Mr Land been opposed by Mr (Madman, many who were absent would have recorded their voles. The result throughout the colony so far. is approximately a, majority for the Oovernment of ten, with six returned as Independents and two returns to come. Min isters, therefore, when they meet, the House will find a much more substantial Opposition than in the last Parliament. The late, hour at which the results reached us prevents our fully analysing the returns. The Licensing .Polls have not yet all reached us. That forth' 1 . \Vaikalo resulted in Ia 1? o votes for licenses to remain as at present, SSS for prohibition, and SSO for reduction of licenses.
