There has been heavy rainfall in the Madras and Bombay provinces, and the prospects are improving. Dr. Jameson has undergone a serious operation in the prison hospital, and an agitation is on foot for his release. Two French torpedo boats collided off Brest. One sank immediately, and the crew are missing. The City Market at Antwerp has been destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at i'SO.OOO. Germany is jealous of Russia's increasing influence in Itaty. Mr Arbuck'o, a millionaire, was found dead in the street in New York. The medical certificate was to the effect that death was caused by heart disease, but murder is suspected, as money and a watch are missing from the body. The P. and 0. Company have declared a dividend of GS per cent. Spofforth, the well-known cricketer, was nearly suffocated in a fire in a tea warehouse in London. The French Government has agreed to grant Germany most favoured treatment in Tunis. Dr. Mair his been elected Moderator of the Established Church of Scotland.
