(BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT). CllKlSTCHintClf, Last Night. The weather is intensely cold with a strong southerly wind blowing. It has been hailing, raining and snowing at intervals since early morning and shews no signs of clearing. A large influx of visitors is expeetc I for the carnival week and the accommodation of the many hotels is fully engaged. The morning was raw and the track was heavy on account of the over night r.iin. Quilriri, Fabulist, Voltigcur. Pompom, Defiance, .Saracen, Black and Red, Lady Zetland, Lord Rossi} n, Lotion and Mahaki were the Cup horses worked, Daystar, Shrew, Euroelydon and Aldcrabot being kept for after hieakfast work. Lord Roslyn, Lit'on and Mahaki together put in the strongest work over a mile and a-quartcr. Fabulist, Pompom and Voltigcur ran the last four furlongs of two rounds smartly. Daystar was ba< ked on Saturday night to win several hundreds at 100 to S. Fabulist badly worsted Black and Red and Daystar in a mile and half gallop on Saturday. Daystar finished a long way in the rear. Mr Titos. Motrin, who has been in Wellington for some days, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. In the evening he wired to Mr Jno. Marshall as follows:—" Have seen the colt. He is dccidully lame, and is an unlikely starter for the Cup, but will decide early next week. The lameness is sonowhere in his thigh. He galloped we'd this morning with Fabulist." It may, therefore, be taken as pretty certain tint Daystar will be scratched for the Cup, so that Irs Canterbury Derby chance may not be interfered with.
