CABLE SUMMARY.
The Admiralty experts have tested p Tasin&nian compressed cabbage, car - rots, and turnips at Deptford. They report that the appearance of the articles is poor ; that they are taster less, tough, and diflicutt to cojk. Their opinion is taht they are decidedly inferior to French and German. It is reported that Dr. Jameson and Sir John Willoughby, now sorving sentences in connection with the Transvaal raid, will shortly be released on the score of ill-health. The Spanish newspapers are protesting against the odious fiction of neutrality adopted by the United States of American in regarl to the Cuban insurrection, and contend that American is really conniving at the filibusting The New York correspondent of the London Times says that negotiations in connection with the Venezuela dispute have not advanced towards a settlement during the last three months, except that in interviews Messrs Olney and Chamberlain minimised and settled tne district difficulty. Sir W. V. Harcourt, in a letter to the press, expresses regret at Lord Rosebery's resignation, and denounces the newspapers for accusing him (Sir William nareourt) of hostility and rancorous feeling an amiable and distinguished statesman. The Greek officers who deserted from the force and assisted the Cretans in the recent rebellion have been acquitted. The Government of Cape Colony is sending 700 police to prevent the rinderpest crossing tho Orange River. An engineer accidentally touched Lieutenant Brusewitz's chair in a cafe at Carlsruhe and declined to apologise. Brasewitz placed his fiiends at the exits and chased the engineer down a passage, killing him with his sword, remarking at the same time, ' My honour is saved.' Sir William Vernon Harcourt declares that the letter published and said to have been written by him, referring to Lord Rosebery, is a forgery. Mr M. Davitt is taking action, with a view of uniting all sections of the Irish Partv under the leadership of John Howard Parncll, M.I", for Meath South, and brother of the late C. S. Parnell. It is reported that the Emperor William disguised, witnessed the Czar's reception in Paris. The Czar has given the Princess Uelene of Montenegro (who is betrothed to the Prince of Naples) a dowry of one million roubles and diamonds of the value «f two million fraucs. Aparty of Alsatian recruits mutinied at Heidelberg, and shouted " Vive la France." They were all arrested.
