There was a good muster of dairy cows—about 40—ami most of them of a gcod class. For good cows close to profit there was a Rood demand, and prices were in advance of what r they have been these last three weeks. There was a fair demand for well-bred calves and yearlings, but coarse cattle of all classes were unsaleable. Except for dairy cows and a few pens of wcll-lrcd yearlings, the tone of the maiket was, comparatively speaking, dull. The Nfcw Zealand Loan & Mkkcaxtii.e Ackncy Company report : London, 4th September, 1800' : The demand siiiee the date of our hist advices has been quiet and while values for prime New Zealand mutton have been fairly well maintained for other descriptions less money has now to be aicepted. A clearance has practically been affected of the damaged meat referred to in our circular of 7th ultimo, but recent arrivals have not turned out altogether satisf ictorily and this in conjunction with a spell of wet weather has tended to unsteady the market. Prime Canterbury lambs' arc fairly firm but with the advanced season the demand for other sorts has materially fallen off ami prices hive given way. 'While holders of Australian mutton for a time professedly maintained a sa'e limit, sheep, of late, have been generally obtainable at less money and this week it was decided by the Committee to abandon the attempt to maintain values by this means. With stocks on the si ot reduced to small compass coincident with a hardening of values in America, frozen foiequartcrs of beef have marked a sharp advance, lip to 2s per Sib having been secured. American ((notations, however, have since receded, and at the close a decline of .">d per stone from the high:st point has to be recorded. Hind quarters continue to meet a dull sale and are now worth but little more than fores. Notwithstanding the wet weather which prevailed this morning, there was a fair demand at Smithfield for mutton and lamb, and prices in some instances ruled tinner. To-day's quotations at Smithfield are :—Prime selected Xcw Zealand mutton, 2s 4d to 2s oil per Sib ; average, la lid to 2s ; inferior, Is lOd ; Australian mutton, Merino, Is Sd ; do., crossbred, Is Oil; prime New Zealand lamb, 2s KM to 3s ; average, 2s (id to 2s 10d : Australian beef, fores, Is Sd to Is !> 1 ; do., hinds, Is Sd to Is KM.
