He has never been trained or tried to gallop, though he comes from a good racing family and is perfectly sound. The Dauphin (sire of Malice) is by Tradu'jcr (imp.), dam .Maria Theresa (imp ). by Rataplan, dam Maria Louise, was a very fast horse, winning, amongst other races, the Canterbury Derby. He is sire of Eratertiite (winner of Wanganui Derby), Donald McKinnon, one of the best cross-country horses in the colony, Ballyhooley, Sylvanus, and many other brilliant performers. Bessemer (dam of .Malice) was bred by the New Zealand Stud Co., is by Musket (imp.), dam Ml Steed, by Stoekham (imp.), dam Miss Butler, by Steeltrap (in p.). Bessemer is also dam of Hukutero, a horse that won the double two years at Uishorne, and as a Stud Horse took champion prize in the show ring. The steeplechase horse Kingswooil also claims Bessemer as dam. Bessemer is full sister to that successful stud mare Steel All, (lam of Levanter, winner of the (.rand National Steeples at Auckland last winter ; she is also dam of St. Patrick (by St Lcgcr), Steel King (by Gipsy), both good performers on the Hat and over hurdles.
