0 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. ADVANCES TO SKTTLEES, Mi; Stevens brought up the report of the Conference with the Lower House on the Government Advances to Settlers Act Amendment Bill, which was agreed to. By it the limit, of advances under the Bill was fixed at £3OOO. SHOPS AND SHOP ASSISTANTS. In Committee the clause under certain circumstances preventing cashiers, etc., from remaining behind in the ollice to balance the books ot the day's transactions, was struck out by 1"> to 11. The clauses giving inspectors the right to inspect hank's andoSioes, and excepting carriers under contract with the Minister of Railways from the provisions of the Bill were also struck out. The Bill was then reported with amendments.
