Poultry, although in good supply, price* ruled very high, with unsatisfied demand. Pigs arc now in good request at much improved values, and pork sold well. The fruit market is certainly dull, and although supplies aie only moderate, retailers show no desire to operate proving the very limited consumption. FROZEN MEAT. The Nhw Zealand Loan & Mercantile Ace.vcv Company (Limited) report under da c : London, 7th August, IS9fi. since our last report arrivals of New Zealand mutton have been moderate, and ivitb a fair demand the position has omewhat improved. Quotations have
remained steady, ami when the damaged meat now in store has he n cleared, some slight improvement may not unreasonably be expected. Holders of Australian mutton have continued to act together, and values have been maintained. For prime crossbred descriptions as high as 2'd and 3d per lb lias been obtained. Frozen lamb has been somewhat freely offered upon a slack market and with a large quantity of damaged carcases values have dec'incil Jd and jj<l per lb. Quotations for American beef have ruled fairly high, but while the demand for frosrn has improved, ((notations have remained practically unaltered. New Zealand has sold at about }d per lb in excess of the pries for Queensland. The Elstree Grange arrived on the 16th ultimo, with the first shipment of frozen mutton from Patagonia. The sheep are very heavy, with large frames, coarse and old, but with a good proportion of lean meat. The prices realised range from 2Ad to 2?d per lb. To-day's quotations at Sniithficld are : - Prime selected New Zealand mutton, 23 3d to 2s fid per 8 lb ; average, 2s to 2s 2d ; inferior, Is lOd ; Australian mutton (merino), Is 9d ; crossbred, Is lOd to Is lid ; prime New Zealand lamb, 3s to 3s Id ; average, 2s 9d to 2s lid; Australian beef fores, lid to Is; hinds, IslOd to Is lid.
NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE. London, August B. Messrs Wcddel and Co. report that there is very little New Zealand butter left in the market, and that there are many enquiries for the best grades of that butter, which cannot be met till the arrival of the first shipments of the new season's butter. Danish has risen and is worth 110 s to 112 s for best qualities, and is quoted at Is Id per lb. retail. There is some New Zealand butt r in private hands which has been kept in cool stores, which is fully worth 10s to 12s perewt. more than in August last year. The market is nearly bare of Sew Zealand cheese. Choicest white would realise 40s to 42s ; coloured New Zealand is in less demand and not worth more than 34s to 3(is. The price of English and Canadian is on the rise, and better prices are likely to rule for some time.
