Since 1878 I have ’controlled the business affairs and politics of The Waikato Times, and for the last nine years my name has appeared on the imprint as the Proprietor. Believing myself, under my arrangements with the late Mr F. A. Whitaker, to be not only morally, but also legally, the Proprietor of that paper, / have devoted my money and best, energies to developing the property and securing for The Waikato Times the position it has attained in the district. / am now informed that the Bank of New Zealand Estates Company (Limited), from whom I leased the building and plant, hold a mortgage from the former Proprietor of the paper, which enables them to sell, not only the building and plant, but also the trade rights. I have therefore ceased to issue si The Waikato Times.
