Waimarino Hospital staff join strike
Waimarino Hospital staff will take part in the nation-wide strike today, but patients will be looked after. The staff, including nurses, cleaners, clerical workers and cooks, are protesting at their employers' plans to scrap many of the conditions of employment they have fought for in past years. The condi-
tions include maternity leave, some sick leave conditions, penal and overtime rates. The are also protesting over this year's wage negotiations. At least one registered nurse will be on the hospital premises through all shifts during the strike to deal with emergencies and other registered nurses will be on call, said the Hospital's principal nurse Eve Rush. She said nurses will only carry
out the duties necessary to keep patients safe. As many patients as possible would be sent home during the strike, said Nurse Rush. She said the patients would be well looked after with local people working voluntarily at the hospital. Ironically some of the volunteers will be nursing staff working during the strike, unpaid.
