"The present day season has much to answer for. A 'drunk' when charged at the police court the other morning, in extenuation of his guilty plea, said that the water was so bad and contained so many insects in the part of the country where he had been working that he made a bee-line (no pun intended) for the nearest public house and sought to kill the microbes with copious draughts of whiskey. The episode cost him a fine of five shillings."
