Don't forget kids' breakfast
What do you give your child for breakfast? Do they skip it altogether or just have toast?
It is a proven fact that a good breakfast avoids mid or late morning fatigue or loss of efficiency halfway through the morning. Studies have shown that a good breakfast gives children better learning capacities because they won't get so tired. Tea and toast make a poor breakfast for children of all ages. They need more than this. Cereals, hot and cold, fruit and milk fit the bill. Milk should be used with both hot and cold cereals. However, if fruit only is served with cold cereals then make sure your child has a milk drink as well. A breakfast cereal is not essential, but if you give your child this they can do without a cooked dish. If they don't like cereals
or porridge then growing children need something more substantial, like eggs and bacon. If they can manage both a cereal and an egg this gives a good start for the day's schooling. If time is a problem and toast suffices then they need milk - give them a glass of milk instead of or as well as the toast. Try and put vegemite, honey or peanut butter on their toast. Some children can't face cereal or a cooked dish, but at least a glass of milk will give some real substenance for the morning. Make sure your children eat something every morning before they leave for school to keep them full of energy right up to lunch time. Helen Pocknall PHN
