Karioi pulp port still Napier

Pulp from Karioi will continue to be shipped through Napier, rather than through Wanganui. Klas Kronkvist, managing director of Winstones Pulp International and chairman of the Wanganui Port company said the decision had been made on purely commercial grounds.

He said the $1 million contract could go to Wanganui at a later date, but that at present no commercially competitive charter was available. He said shipping costs were reduced at Napier because of back-loading. Ships would have to be sent to Wanganui empty to pick up the pulp.
