Ultramen race in Auckland
Members of the Waiouru Multi- Sports Club competed in an Ultraman (half Ironman) earlier this month in Auckland.
This Ultraman is a lead up to the Ironman Competition to be held in St Heliers, Auckland on March 12. A total of 480 competitors took part in this event this time covering three disciplines, swimming, cycling and running. Total distance covered is 113km. The Waiouru contingent included Major Eddie Bright and Staff Sergeant Peter Malloy from AATC (Army Adventure Training Centre), Corporal Marty Noakes from SEME (School of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers), and Lance Corporal Robbie (the smiler) Vant Wout, (4 ATG Workshops). The first stage was a 2km swim, which took place on Lake Pupuke on the North Shore. All four men completed this in just over half an hour. Then came cycling (using special triathlon bikes) for 90km to Helensville and back via Whenuapai Air Base. Approximate time taken was between two and three quarters to nearly three hours. Lastly was a 21km road run out to Devonport and back.
Approximate time taken was between one and two hours. As mentioned these times are only approximate as yet the final
results are not through, but we believe the men finished between 50th and 100th place. For those interested in joining the Waiouru Multi-Sports Club, it is open to all soldiers and
residents of Waiouru and Ohakune. They train in swimming, cycling and running, these being the main three disciplines for triathlons. Canoeing is also covered as this is sometimes included in these marathon events.
