To many Waimarino people Ruapehu appears to have iost some of her permanent snow cover. Long time locals may remember seeing the glaciers looking smaller, but DSIR scientists measuring the ice last year found that Ruapehu's glaciers had receded by as much as 240 metres in length and 30 metres in depth since 1968, when regular permanent ice surveys were stopped.
